Unfamiliar Subscription Language Added Friction

Subscription messaging needs to explain a buying option in language shoppers recognise immediately. On this sports nutrition brand’s product cards, product pages and cart, recurring orders were labelled “Autoship”. Although accurate, the term asked shoppers to interpret a less familiar label at the point of choice. That matters because subscription decisions already involve price, delivery frequency and commitment. Extra cognitive effort can make the one-off purchase feel easier to understand. Blend’s approach to diagnosing CRO messaging problems looks at whether shoppers understand an offer and feel confident enough to act. We saw a focused opportunity: keep the existing subscription benefits and savings, but describe the option with clearer customer-facing language so its value was obvious throughout the purchase journey.

A/B Test

Clearer Subscription Messaging Across the Journey

We ran an A/B test using Intelligems. On product cards and product pages, the variant replaced “Autoship” with “Subscribe” beside the existing “Save 10%” badge. In the cart, “Autoship & Save 10%” became “Subscribe and Save 10%”. The hypothesis was that familiar, consistent language would make the recurring-order option easier to recognise and increase subscription orders per visitor without requiring a wider redesign.

The Results

Clearer subscription wording increased subscription orders per visitor by 100.43%, while average order value rose by 5.79%. Add-to-cart rate decreased by 11.89% and clicks on the product-page add-to-cart button fell by 6.07%. The pattern suggests the new label improved the quality of subscription intent: fewer visitors progressed through add to cart, but those who did were more likely to choose a recurring order and placed slightly higher-value orders. The test ran for seven days, and although some secondary measures were still directional, the subscription result gave the brand enough evidence to roll out the clearer wording. The winning language was made permanent across the journey, including the site announcement bar. A useful next step would be to monitor post-launch subscription share and retention, then test whether benefit-led supporting copy can improve add-to-cart behaviour without weakening subscription uptake.
