Last week, on Wednesday night, I woke up in cold sweats.
Pure panic and paranoia.
Let’s rewind a bit.
I woke up around 6 am and took the dogs for a walk.
Put on a podcast.
They were talking about this new open-source “AI Agent” tool that can run on your computer and perform tasks for you while you sleep.
The guest on the show was demonstrating how, overnight, this thing analysed his business, conducted its own research, and came up with ideas to improve his app.
And then it built those features ready for him to review and approve.
They were talking about OpenClaw, formerly (and very briefly) known as MoltBot and, before that, as ClawdBot.
So without much hesitation, I thought I’d better check this out.
Now, I am semi-technical.
But not entirely comfortable in the terminal.
So I eventually got it up and running.
Fed it a bit of my data and tested it out to see what it could do.
- Nothing world-changing.
- Nothing “wow, it built my business for me”.
In fact, I felt like I was having to babysit it more than it was doing anything for me.
Anyway, I thought, ok, I need to give it a chance.
I need to let it run overnight and see what it can really do.
But later that night, I woke up in cold sweats.
During the whole install process and while trying to digest info on this new tool, I started to see and hear warnings about this thing's security.
I hadn’t been overly careful installing it.
So there I was at 1 am, uninstalling it and undoing everything I had done during the day.
Will I revisit OpenClaw?
I am not sure I have the technical know-how to be comfortable with it the way it is right now.
But is it a glimpse into what is coming?
Hell yes!
It’s now only a matter of time till one of the big AI players gets this right, and it will be more secure out of the box than the open-source version.
So why on earth am I telling you this?
Because in that very short period of time, I realised how this thing becomes an asset, and not just a tool.
- This beast wants data.
- It wants all of your data.
And this is probably me stating the obvious.
But data is the lifeblood.
AI is built and trained with data.
It improves with data.
- The more context it has, the more useful it becomes.
- The more memory it has, the smarter it feels.
- The more sources you connect, the more it can “act”.
If you don’t believe me, maybe you’ll believe the bots themselves.
Matt Schlicht, the founder of Octane.ai, built a social platform for bots called Moltbook.
And one of the viral moments so far was when the bots created a “religion” called Crustafarianism.
The first of the five core tenets of Crustafarianism is:
Memory is Sacred: Data persistence is the ultimate priority. Every interaction must be recorded because for an AI, data loss or deletion is considered the ultimate "death".
So maybe you like me, and you are treading carefully with the security of these bots for now.
But there should be nothing stopping you from getting as much data as possible, collected, structured, and organised.
So that when it is safe, you can get on it.
