What is Netflix.shop?

Netflix, Inc. announced this week that they will be offering everything from apparel, jewellery to collectables on their new eCommerce website netflix.store. Items available on launch day include hoodies, tees, jewellery and a collectable clock inspired by the streamer’s anime series Yasuke, as well as tees, hats and a wooden kendama toy from the anime series Eden. All collectables have been designed by up-and-coming designers: Nathalie Nguyen, Kristopher Kites and Jordan Bentley. Products from beloved titles like The Witcher and Stranger Things, as well as new Netflix logo-wear from Japanese fashion house BEAMS, are next to join the lineup.

The limited-edition items join the vast assortment of consumer products that have been made available through Netflix’s trusted partners. Netflix developed and launched the eCommerce site with Shopify. The online store will first be available in the US before expanding into other countries around the world in the coming months.

Netflix has said, “We’re thrilled to give fans a new way to connect with their favourite stories, and to introduce them to the next wave of artists and designers who embrace the power of storytelling in all its forms.“

According to hl.co.uk, In the first quarter, Netflix missed subscriber growth projections by 2 million. However, The total number of paid subscriptions is now 207.6m globally, up 14% from last year.

Expanding Their Revenue

The online store offers a new source of revenue for Netflix and expands its product line beyond the items it sells through partners such as American superstores Target and Walmart.

Netflix isn’t the first to offer limited-edition apparel and other consumer products. Popular entertainment franchises, such as Disney, Star Wars and Marvel have been in this market for many years. Producing apparel and other merchandise for fans of popular movies or television series is another way to keep fans invested long after they turn away from their screens.

From a design standpoint

Netflix Screens

At first glance, the overall website looks great with clear call-to-actions and an easy user journey. As there are currently only a few products on the site everything seems to be easily accessible. The overall feel of the site feels clean and fresh and definitely fits Netflix’s brand. The imagery and tone of voice is something we noticed too. Netflix is a pioneer in their industry and this shows on the site.

On that note, another thing we like about the website is that they offer accessibility tools for users to have a better shopping experience. Accessibility is something that has been brought to the forefront of many eCommerce sites recently. Web Accessibility is required by law in many situations. While Accessibility is fundamentally designed to include those with disabilities by removing barriers to communication and interaction, it will also improve the overall user experience and satisfaction of users and it can be used to help enhance your brand and extend your market reach.
